Some of the more common barcode types are described below:

Also called a 3 of 9 barcode or HIBCC. Encoding numbers and uppercase letters. Used in inventory control, unique identifiers and industrial applications.

Very similar to the Code 39 barcode but with higher density and two mandatory control characters. It supports all 128 ASCII characters.

7. Expanded DataBar barcode 

Also called Expanded RSS Barcode. Encode a GTIN but you can add data such as expiration date, weight and lot number.

8. Expanded DataBar Barcode In Stack 

Also called Expanded Stacked RSS barcode. It encodes a GTIN barcode but you can add data such as expiration date, weight and lot number.

9. Limited DataBar barcode 

Also called restricted RSS. Encodes a GTIN-14 (EAN-14) barcode recommended for very small items that need to be read with a gun. Not recommended for sale.

Also called DataBar barcode and RSS-14. Encodes a GTIN-14 (EAN-14) barcode. Sale of small items of jewelry and hardware.

Also called GTIN-13, ASIN, EAN/UCC-13, JAN-13, EAN-99 barcode. For all types of products except books, magazines and medicines. Read worldwide by any type of reader.

15. EAN-8 barcode 

Also called GTIN-8, JAN-8 barcode. For all types of products except books, magazines and medicines. Read worldwide by any type of reader and used when a GTIN-13 barcode does not fit.

16. Barcode 128 

Also called GTIN-128, EAN-128, UCC/EAN-128, UCC-128 barcode. Includes product information for containers and pallets, weight and dimensions, inventory control, and internal coding.

17. Coupon barcode 

Also called UCC/EAN-128 Coupon Barcode. Used for coupons on products for sale. Combine a UPC-A symbology and a GS1-128 barcode.

18. ISBN barcode 

Also called Bookland EAN barcode. Includes the International Standard Book Number for books.

Used in printed music publications to represent the International Standard Music Number.

21. DUN-14 barcode
